FUNSAR/SARTECH II Class Prep Information

There are a number of requirements that must be completed PRIOR to the start of the FUNSAR course. This is an accurate list as of November 2023.
Step 1: Register for class with Central Lakes SAR. Cost is $200 for individuals, $150 per person for groups of 2 or more. Groups of two or more, contact [email protected] to register.
Step 2: Sign up for FUNSAR/SARTECH II Bundle on NASAR's website. Cost is $190.
- Complete the Crime Scene Awareness Class, print and bring certificate to class.
- Complete the GPS Basic Use Class, print and bring certificate to class.
- Complete all steps of the FUNSAR/SARTECH II class until you reach the option to download and print the FUNSAR Position Task Book (all pages) and SARTECH II Position Task Book (pages 1-6). Print Position Task Books to bring to class.
- Complete the Crime Scene Awareness Class, print and bring certificate to class.
- Complete the GPS Basic Use Class, print and bring certificate to class.
- Complete all steps of the FUNSAR/SARTECH II class until you reach the option to download and print the FUNSAR Position Task Book (all pages) and SARTECH II Position Task Book (pages 1-6). Print Position Task Books to bring to class.
Step 3: Complete other pre-requisite courses, print and bring certificates to class:
A. FEMA ICS-100/IC-100 Certificate, cost is Free.
B. If you do not have a valid professional rescuer/health care provider CPR certificate, you'll need to attend a CPR/First Aid class, cost varies.

D. If you do not have a valid Wilderness First Aid (WFA), Wilderness First Responder, Wilderness-EMT certificate, or state licensed pre-hospital provider license, you'll need to attend a Wilderness First Aid Class, cost varies.

Step 4: Be familiar with Fundamentals of Search & Rescue Vol 2, cost varies up to $80.

Step 5: Be comfortable demonstrating these skills:
- Build Emergency Shelter
- Build Sustainable Fire
- Map Reading
- Land Navigation
- Radio Communication
- Search Methods
- Tracking/Sign Cutting
*NOTE: these are all part of the FUNSAR class, but being familiar with them ahead of time will help a TON.

Step 6: Arrive to class with Position Task Books and all pre-requisite certificates. Instructor will sign off on all completed items, and test items as they are administered.
ITEMS TO BRING FOR CLASS:
- All certificates, printed Position Task Books
- FUNSAR Book
- Note-taking materials
- Materials to build an emergency shelter (tarp or emergency tent, 550-cord, tent stakes)
- Materials to build a fire (lighter or matches, fire starter; wood will be provided)
- Compass
- Protractor
- Flashlight
- Tape Measure
ITEMS TO BRING FOR CLASS:
- All certificates, printed Position Task Books
- FUNSAR Book
- Note-taking materials
- Materials to build an emergency shelter (tarp or emergency tent, 550-cord, tent stakes)

Step 7: After class is completed and Position Task Books are signed, complete these final items:
- Upload Completed FUNSAR Position Task Books in online NASAR Course.
- Take the SARTECH II Online Test and Map Exercises.
- Submit SARTECH II Position Task Book.
- Receive your SARTECH II Certification!

- Take the SARTECH II Online Test and Map Exercises.
- Submit SARTECH II Position Task Book.
- Receive your SARTECH II Certification!
